Is the filter cartridge on a fish tank pump the lg blue one in the very back or the sm white one in the front?

I am using EM Erythromycin in the tank and instructions say to remove either the activated CARBON filter or FILTER cartridge and continue aeration. Thanks !! I am a beginner.

Not sure what type of filter you have. If it is in the tank, then take out the black pebbles but leave the cotton.

If you have an undergravel filter, the charcoal is in special fittings that go on the top of the tubes. http://www.aquariumguys.com/leescarbon.html

If your filter hangs off the back of the tank then the charcoal is in that filter thingy that slides in behind the wheel. http://www.marineandreef.com/Penguin_Replacement_Filter_Cartridge_Marineland_p/rml01320.htm

If you have a filter that sits under the tank, then the charcoal is the black stuff.
