How do you empty a gas tank to replace the fuel pump on a 94 Camaro Z28?

I have a 94 Camaro Z28 and it’s been sitting for a year. It doesn’t crank because the fuel pump is damaged. The gas tank is full, though. Does the gas go bad after it’s been sitting for a year? How can I drop the gas tank and replace the fuel pump when the tank is full of gas? What are the steps to replacing the fuel pump, too.

first of all its good that it wont start because your fuel is bad.. it goes abd after about 50 -60 day unless treated with some kind of stabilizer… just syphon the gas out with your mouth or one of them syphon pumps then put a 2 by 4 on your jack and pull the tank down… its simple, but if it has a screen to were you cant get a hose in there you will have to drop the gas tank down full and empty it by hand.

Can I have 16 g fish tank with air pump but no filter ?

If I am wrong somebody will tell me, but I believe that the fuel pump is replaced from the top so you do not need to empty the tank.

The shelf life on your gas is border line, but it should still work.

i own a shop and the best way to do this is cipher it out with a small hose,i just got done doing one,it takes a while to get the most of it out,and you wont get all of it,but you,ll get enough to make the tank easier to handle, good luck with it hope this helps.

if you can’t get a hose in the tank to remove the gas…then you will have to drop the tank full. use a floor jack…"DO NOT TRY TO MANHANDLE IT" with the floor jack and a block of wood put the tension on the tank. then undo the bolts that hold the straps in place…they may be rusted so spray them….never use heat on these bolts as they are near the gas tank. once the straps are loose lower the tank slowly…you will have to watch the wires and lines…when you can get to the wires and lines undo them…then lower the tank to the ground.

the assembly that holds the fuel pump in the tank can be removed by tapping the "spindle" to the left…as in removing a bolt or nut. once this is done pull the assembly out of the tank. then have someone help you elevate the tank to a bench and siphon the gas out into a suitable container. Put the new fuel pump in..tap the ring back in to place and replace the fuel tank in the reverse order.

fill with fuel and you are ready to go.

    Hope this helps

siphone pump works best. But beware if its anything like a 91 your in for a lot of work if your doing it in your own garage. Youll need to take out the exhaust system and even remove the rear end from the car to get enough clearance to snake the filler neck out. Its all one piece all the way down to the tank and if you damage it- it cant be fixed only replaced @ $500.00 for a new tank (used are alwase damaged) think twice about haveing someone else take the responsability for it. If a shop screws it up they have to foot the bill for a new tank!

Use a tube/hose and siphon out most/all the fuel. Then this is the easiest way: lower the rear axle by just removing the shock bolts, loosen gas tank straps to drop it a bit, then remove the carpet in the trunk and cut a hole in the middle about 2 x 2 (, andyou have an access panel – or ….. do it the right way….

Firts get a set of stands (regular ones will work)Jack the car up on them around the 6th notch. Putting the frame on them back by the rear. Slowly drop the rear just enough to take the rear down about 6-12 inches, leaving the jack under there. Next pull off the panhard bar, then take the controll arm above that off also. Don’t worry the rear is still held on by the lower controll arms and won’t go anywhere. Next take off the lower shock bolts and pull the shock off the lower stud. Then lower the rearend all the way down (they will swing on the lower controll arms). Now I think about it i really don’t remember but check the brake line it might hang up. Once the rear end is hanging as far down as it will go. now hopefully you have removed the tires. You must now remove the exausty from the converter and swing it out towards the passenger side so that it is completely out of the way of swing the rear down. It will be stretched out side ways under your car. In the drivers fender is the charcoal canister. Remove the panel to expose it and then remove the lines from it that run to the tank. Then remove the scews that hold the filler tube to the fender also. If there is fuel in the tank you might want to siphon it out some way before proceeding. The lines that run to the tank on the frame rail can now be disconnected. (right by the filter) Now you can remove the 2 strap bolts that hold the tank in place. If the tank is empty then there virtually is no weight to speak of. I did this whole damn job by my self! Now is the tricky part. The gas tank is exact oppisite from what the repair manuals will tell you. The tank will have to be pulled downtipping to the right and when it is down far enough then pulle toward the pass side of the car. Enough that the tank will be slightly out side the car and the POS filler neck will still be STUCK in the fender. The reason for this is the fender has 2 lips on it the only one you can see is the outside on but there is one on the inside that it will catch on. And this is the POS part. The fuel tank will NOT come oput the back of the car like you would think , it has to be pushed toward the front of the car enough to clear tha filler tube. (I don’t know whay Gm just didnot make it a 2 piece neck but oh well). Once you get it just to where you think "my god why won’t this thing fall. Climb out from under the car and on the drivers side stick you head into the fender and you will see why. Take a screwdriver and use it to pry down on the top od the filler neck just to cler the lip on the neck (obout an 1/8th ince or so and WALA the tank should hit the ground. From here it is self expanitory to reinstall. But remember to put the DAMN exaust back on befor you relift the rear end up, You’ll be cussing more than you have been allready. Now to the pump . Pull the retainer screwws at the top of the pump out and lift th whole assembly out as one. Now you will notice the stock pump is in its own case. Yellowish color. Take and remove the lines and retainer off to remove the yellowish container. The corregated hose will stay the same shape after removed.

you will have to run a hose down the fill spout and draw the gas out as much as you can. then you will have to take the straps loose that hold the tank to car. On top of tank you find a the hose connections, take these loose, loosen bolt or screws from around the sending unit. remove this from tank, fuel pump will be attached to this configuration. Make sure you get the fuel pump designed for your car. it has preset pressure in it. then reverse the procedure to put it back. Yes gas can go bad after sitting for a year.

Are you absolutely sure the fuel pump does not work, there are chemicals available to add to old gas to rejuvinate them,I have changed fuel pumps with full gas tanks before,it’s tricky but it can be done.If you want to empty the tank if that is your preference, use a syphon hose, make sure that what ever you are draining the gas into is lower than the gas tank,so the fuel will flow, there are syphon hoses that have a built in pump on them so you don’t have to suck on the end of the hose and get a mouth full of gas, tastes like crap and takes for ever to get the taste out of your mouth,it’s not good for you anyway.Even if the fuel pump is not working thats no reason why it won’t crank over recharge the battery first and clean the terminals and then see if it cranks over, before you think of changing the pump.Hope this is not to jumbled to understand
