Is it worth buying a cat water fountain? I have heard that cat fountains are good for a cat’s health in the sense that they are supposed to make them drink more water; the reason is the claim that many cats prefer to drink running water rather than water out of a bowl. However, my cat has never tried to drink out of a tap; does this mean then that she wouldn’t be interested in a fountain and wouldn’t drink any more water this way? (I bought the Cat -it dome but returned it as it didn’t work properly, but was considering buying the Drinkwell fountain).
I think that these fountains are a great way of increasing a cats water intake. Its impossible to say whether your cat will drink from it but I’ve heard very positive stories about it.
Many cat owners claim their cats do not drink water (!!) purely because they don’t see it happen.
I say try it and see! References : Registered veterinary nurse
We’re going to get one for our cats, but this is because they prefer the fresh water [i'm sure most animals do but don't show it]. Our tub drips and they drink out of there instead of drinking out of their bowl. And they try to drink out of the tap.
The flowing of the water is supposed to keep it fresher, longer, but many cats have lived to their teens and older on water from a normal bowl References :
I think it is a great idea. My cats love to drink out of the faucet and they drink out of it all day long. The fountains though are plastic and you need to be careful since plastic can harbor bacteria. The vet suggests ceramic or stainless steel bowls but I don’t think they make this construction for the cat fountains. My cats cannot drink out of the plastic due to skin allergies so I get to leave the faucet on for them along with fresh water in their ceramic bowls. They are spoiled rotten. If the faucet is not on I will hear my little cat crying in the bathroom until I turn it on. References :
If your electric bills are reasonable then go for it. If you live in a cold climate it should add a little humidity to the air in your home in winter, which might make you and your cat more comfortable. References :
Go ahead and try it out, she may like it. See what the return policy is on those just in case. I am thinking of getting one as well, because one of my cats prefers to drink from the bathtub faucet. References :
Our cat would constantly get up on the sinks and try to drink from the faucet, so we got a water fountain. He rarely used it, so it was kind of waste of money. As for the health reasons, I think if you just change a normal water bowl everyday that would be just as good. But all cats are different, so i would try it to see if your cat likes it better, and if it doens’t like it, just return it. References :
The fountain I have is the one where the water goes down sort of a slide, rather than the type like a faucet. It is a real hit, although I also keep a regular water bowl available, and they alternate drinking from both.
But with the number of cats I have, and the amount of water I replace regularly in the fountain, I think it is a bigger hit.
One of my cats has learned to drink from a dripping faucet, but my others, despite watching her, still have not gotten the trick of drinking from the faucet. They try to bite the stream. References :
WOW! They make those?! That makes so much sense! I always wondered why my cat insists on drinking from the shower and the bath instead of the lovely clean water I’ve left for him downstairs. I think that sounds like a brilliant idea – cats always go for the most challenging option, eg, if it was between a bowl of ready made food and a running mouse, they’d go after the mouse every time. So the fountain sounds great cos your cat would have the satisfaction of ‘catching’ his own water – I know that sounds silly but I’m sure there’s an element of truth in it. References :
I bought a cat fountain and both mine really like it, they now only drink from the fountain instead of drinking from water in the sink or begging at the tap. References : Look at http://www.seapets.co.uk
