Do I need a constant water source going to a garden fish pond?
Jul 3
Someone told me there needs to be a direct water source going to a garden pond. Can’t I just clean it out and refill it with the garden hose? Also, if electricity is hard to come by in the area, can you buy solar powered pumps?
No and yes.
I have a pond that is not supplied by anything but rainwater. I also have a solar powered pump, very small but it oxygenates the water (along with an oxygenating plant) sufficiently enough to sustain 6 fish, tadpoles/frogs etc.
Do not top up with the hosepipe as tapwater is treated. Use rainwater froma rain water butt if it gets really low.

Yes, you can clean out and fill with water hose. I do not see any problem.

no need for a direct water source, but it does need to circulate to keep it aerated, then throw in a few snails or koi to keep the algae down.
solar powered pumps come in many varieties.

The pond needs to be aerated some how to keep the water moving. However, if you use city water that is treated you will kill your fish by putting the water directly in the pond. You must either let the chemical air out in a separate container over night before putting it in the pond, or add a primer that neutralizes the chemicals. This is a matter of life and death of your fish.
